What happens if Congress creates a law that is so complex and obtuse as to be subject to a wide range of interpretations? In a dispute between a citizen and an interpreter, who is really making the laws? Today our government claims the power and authority to deny you the right to own property (real estate or otherwise) and the right to earn a living doing honest work. They claim this authority through the use of property tax, income tax, and inflation (printing of money). The authority to tax 1% is no different than the authority to tax 100%. The authority to devalue your savings by 3% is the same authority needed to devalue your savings by 100%. Just because the government restrains its use of this authority (to prevent killing the host that it feeds on), does not mean that it does not claim and exercise a part of that authority.

The ability to tax income implies the ability to deny the right to work to earn a living. The authority that allows government to tax 2% also allows them, with a stroke of a pen, to tax 100%. It sets the precedent that the government owns your labor (you’re a slave), but lets you keep some of it.

Property tax is nothing more than a “wealth” tax and implies that the state owns all property and rents it. The state can raise rent at any time.

I recently received an e-mail that wants to encourage Americans to stop complaining about how bad the president and congress are performing. In this e-mail they claim that we shouldn’t complain about the Iraq war because we have a volunteer army and that any individual is “able to refuse to go and end up with either a “general” discharge, an “other than honorable” discharge or, worst case scenario, a “dishonorable” discharge after a few days in the brig.” Is the Iraq war a war that American’s are voluntarily fighting?

I decided to do some research into the debate over social security to better understand how and why many people claim it is broken. What I found was quite disturbing. The government is taxing you more than necessary to cover today’s social security expenses, borrowing and spending the surplus on the general fund, and promising the pay back the borrowed money with interest by taxing you again in the future. By spending the social security surplus, the government has created a situation where the rich are borrowing money from the poor and middle classes today (through higher than necessary social security taxes) and promising to pay it back years later (through higher income taxes).
